Standard car roadside assistance was built around four-wheel vehicles, and most of the equipment — wheel-lift trucks, dollies, tow chains — does not work on motorcycles. Dead batteries are the second category, especially after a cold week or a parasitic drain from a charger left disconnected; a portable jump pack solves it on the spot. Running out of gas is more common on older bikes without a low-fuel warning — most roadside services deliver a few gallons. The fourth is mechanical failure or crash damage, which always means a tow and ideally a tow to a shop you already trust, not the closest one to where you broke down.

What national roadside assistance actually covers

Coverage varies by provider but a typical motorcycle plan includes a tow to the nearest qualified shop within 35 to 100 miles, jump-starts, a flat-tire change if you carry a spare or plug kit, gas delivery up to a few gallons, and lockout assistance. Not covered: parts, labor at the shop, an Uber home if you're stranded far from your bike, and damage to the motorcycle if the contractor's equipment isn't rated for it. Read the tow distance limits carefully — being towed 100 miles to a shop that doesn't service your make is worse than being towed 30 miles to a dealer that does.

There are three places motorcycle roadside coverage comes from. Standalone roadside services like AAA Plus, Allstate Motor Club, and Better World Club (the only one explicitly designed for motorcycles and bicycles). Insurance add-ons through Geico Motorcycle, Progressive, Dairyland, and Allstate, typically running $5 to $15 per year on top of your premium and often the cheapest path to coverage. Membership organizations like the AMA, the Harley Owners Group (HOG), the BMW MOA, and Indian Riders Group, which include or sell discounted roadside as part of membership and often have the most motorcycle-specific contractor networks. If you ride a Harley, HOG's program is purpose-built. If you ride anything else, the AMA's program is the broadest non-brand option.

When to skip the national service and call a local tower

If you break down in a metro area, a local motorcycle-specialty tower will usually arrive faster, charge less, and definitely have proper equipment. National services contract out to whichever local company is available; you don't get to choose, and you don't always get a flatbed. A direct call to a local motorcycle towing service lets you confirm equipment over the phone, ask whether they regularly tow your make and engine size, and route the bike to a shop you've chosen rather than whoever the dispatcher picks. The downside is paying out of pocket — usually $100 to $250 within a 25-mile radius, more for distance — but for a bike worth keeping unscratched it can be the right trade.
